My take on the Abortion Law: Alabama

A group of white, middle-aged men dictating what women can - or, for that matter, can't - do with their own bodies.

Something sounds a bit off...

In my first post, I mentioned in passing the new bill on abortion in Alabama, which states that:

(c) In present state law, Section 13A-6-1, Code of Alabama 1975, defines a person for homicide purposes to include an unborn child in utero at any stage of development, regardless of viability.

(d) In the United States Declaration of Independence, the principle of natural law that "all men are created equal" was articulated. The self-evident truth found in natural law, that all human beings are equal from creation, was at least one of the bases for the anti-slavery movement, the women's suffrage movement, the Nuremberg war crimes trials, and the American civil rights movement. If those movements had not been able to appeal to the truth of universal human equality, they could not have been successful.

(e) Abortion advocates speak to women's rights, but they ignore the unborn child, while medical science has increasingly recognized the humanity of the unborn child.

(1) ABORTION. The use or prescription of any instrument, medicine, drug, or any other substance or device with the intent to terminate the pregnancy of a woman known to be pregnant with knowledge that the termination by those means will with reasonable likelihood cause the death of the unborn child. The term does not include these activities if done with the intent to save the life or preserve the health of an unborn child, remove a dead unborn child, to deliver the unborn child prematurely to avoid a serious health risk to the unborn child's mother, or to preserve the health of her unborn child. The term does not include a procedure or act to terminate the pregnancy of a woman with an ectopic pregnancy, nor does it include the procedure or act to terminate the pregnancy of a woman when the unborn child has a lethal anomaly.

Section 4. (a) It shall be unlawful for any person to intentionally perform or attempt to perform an abortion except as provided for by subsection (b).
(b) An abortion shall be permitted if an attending physician licensed in Alabama determines that an abortion is necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk to the unborn child's mother. Except in the case of a medical emergency defined herein, the physician's determination shall be confirmed in writing by a second physician licensed in Alabama. The confirmation shall occur within 180 days after the abortion is completed and shall be prima facie evidence for a permitted abortion.
Section 6. (a) An abortion performed in violation of this act is a Class A felony.

Are you pro-life? Or pro-choice?

My thoughts? I'm glad you asked.

1. 'Abortion advocates speak to women's rights, but they ignore [the humanity of] the unborn child.'

I believe that an embryo is a life form, however, it has not yet developed a brain, or even formed a body or a voice. It would be impossible to take into account the humanity of the child if that humanity is not yet present. So, shouldn't we listen to the mother, who is arguably the voice of the child?
Anyone under 18 is seen as irresponsible, unable to make decisions for themselves, and they are under the control of their parents - whatever they say, goes. YET, an unborn baby's mother cannot even have a say in what she wants for her child. This is simply hypocritical on society's views on the role of parents.

2. '[Not allowed to abort] when the unborn child has a lethal anomaly.'
Anencephaly is an example of a lethal fatal anomaly characterised by the absence of the brain and cranium above the base of the skull. This leads to death before or shortly after birth.
Therefore, you are not allowing the woman to abort, even though their child will die soon after birth - seems pretty pointless, right? Surely it would be much simpler, more-cost effective and better for mother's mental health if she were simply able to abort the child?

3. Do you think you're being clever by acknowledging that cells are alive? Good job!

The embryo is a group of cells, not yet anywhere near being a fully formed child - would you rather this child's life be prevented, or that they get shot at 21 because of America's refusal to ban guns because they are 'a basic human right'?
If the mother does not want the child, how do you think that child would feel? Likely the mother would struggle looking after the child, possibly leading to an unhealthy mother-child relationship, which could end up with abuse or neglect. Then what? You place the child into foster care, and use money that the government doesn't have to give this child and education and put food on their plate.

The abortion bill evidently emphasises the importance of the mother and child's physical health, but does not take into account the mother nor child's mental health, or the future implications of these problems.

4. Furthermore, I would like to draw attention to the phrase 'Class A felony.'

Murderers, serial killers, rapists, and women who have abortions.
Can you spot the odd one out? Ah, yes - definitely rapists. Because, in America, there are countless rape incidents happening every single day, and the victims are left to suffer in silence without the criminals being convicted.

How many rapists have not been punished for their crimes? How many cases are simply forgotten about? How many times are women blamed for what they wear or don't wear? Instead of blaming men, women are held accountable - why not teach men to control themselves, instead of dictating what women should wear to 'prevent rape'? By telling someone to wear more conservative clothing, you are essentially saying 'rape the other girl, the one who is wearing a short skirt.'

Rape is one of the leading causes of unwanted pregnancies. Prevent rape, prevent unwanted pregnancies, prevent a significant number of abortions.

*

Whether you identify as male, female, neither or both, I hope you feel as passionately on this subject as I do, and I hope that people will stand up for the right for women to do what they feel is right regarding their bodies and their children.
We have been controlled for too long, accepting men's views as our own, and any ounce of freedom we spent centuries gaining is rapidly deteriorating, and will continue to do so until it's too late.

We're not living in the 19th century. Wake up America.

So, I'll ask you again: are you pro-life, or pro-choice?

  2. i love this post and how you highlight all the issues with modern society. but the thing is, its not always about the mum wanting to abort and not being allowed to. theres also the side where the mum wantd to keep the child but her parents/ the dad of the unborn child/ her peers/ other stuff pressurizes her into aborting the child when she doesnt want to. i think thats also a really important topic to talk about.

and i really cant get my head around the fact that mums with abortions (that abort? dont know how to phrase it ) are on the same level as murderers and rapists. wtf
